This Week
Western Premiers’ Conference: Premiers of Canada’s Western provinces and territories met this past week. The primary discussion points included the economy, affordability, and future prosperity. The Premiers highlighted the uniqueness of each province and territory and highlighted the need for the federal government to complement regional and local priorities. The full communiqué highlighting key concerns can be found here.
Fiscal update: Alberta closed the 2022-23 fiscal year with a $11.6-billion surplus, exceeding Budget 2022’s projections. With recent changes to legislation, the government is committed to growing the Heritage Fund to ensure the province is well-equipped to handle future uncertainty. Alberta’s fiscal projections continue to look positive while the government provides significant affordability measures to assist Albertans. This week’s fiscal update was the first delivered by new President of the Treasury Board and Finance Minister Nate Horner.
Opposing federal Clean Fuel Regulations: Alberta joined the Government of Saskatchewan and the Atlantic provinces in calling on the federal government to halt the implementation of the Federal Clean Fuel Regulations. Minister Schulz argued that the program would put added pressure on consumers increasing expenses for vulnerable households, businesses, and industries. The entire letter from Minister Schulz can be read here.
Report on Alberta’s population growth: In the first quarter of 2023, Alberta welcomed over 15,000 Canadians and over 35,000 people from around the world. The government attributed much of the growth to Alberta’s unique offering of diverse jobs, low taxes, higher earnings, and a strong economy.
Supports for low-income students: The Alberta Student Grant will receive an immediate increase to reduce financial barriers for low-income students. The increase amounts to $175 per month in support payments.
