New Deputy Minister’s Council: Following Premier Smith’s cabinet announcement last week, Cabinet appointed senior officials to Deputy Council. The complete list of the Deputy Ministers’ Council can be found here.
 
Federal Sustainable Jobs Legislation: In response to the federal government’s proposed ‘Sustainable Jobs Act’, the Premier highlighted Alberta’s Emissions Reduction and Energy Development Plan. The Premier requested mandatory Alberta government appointments to the federal government’s proposed council and threatened that if the council provides recommendations that are inconsistent with Alberta’s plan, Alberta will not recognize their legitimacy. Alberta Wildfires: Despite recent rainfall bolstering efforts to control wildfires, there are 75 active wildfires 21 of which are classified as ‘out of control’. Over 13,000 Albertans remain evacuated due to wildfires. 

What’s Next

MLA Swearing-in Ceremony: Following last month’s election, MLAs are expected to be formally sworn-in on Monday, June 19. 
 
Legislative Calendar: MLAs will briefly return to the Legislature next week on June 20th for the election of presiding officers, including Speaker. Beyond that, MLAs will next return to the Legislature on October 30 for the Speech from the Throne. 
 
Stampede Event: The Progressive Contractors Association (PCA) and CLAC are hosting their annual Stampede gathering on Wednesday, July 12 in Calgary. Details are available at this link
