Budget 2023: On Tuesday, the Government of Alberta released Budget 2023 titled “Securing Alberta’s Future”. The Budget forecasts a $2.4 billion surplus, makes key commitments in healthcare and public safety, and includes new fiscal planning commitments to keep future budgets out of deficits. Spring session legislation: In addition to passing the Budget, Government House Leader Joseph Schow announced three pieces of legislation for this spring session. These proposed bills include:
- Bill 8 – the Alberta Firearms Act
- Bill 9 – the Red Tape Reduction Statutes Amendment Act
- Bill 10 – the Financial Statutes Amendment Act
Healthcare wait times: Last fall, the government announced launched the Healthcare Action Plan tasked with decreasing ER wait times, improving EMS response times, reducing wait times for surgeries and empowering frontline workers. This week, the government released a 90-day update showing improvements in all four areas of focus. The full report can be found here.
