Manitoba Votes Day Seven

Overview

During the first weekend of the Manitoba election both the NDP and PC Leaders ventured outside of Winnipeg.

NDP Leader Wab Kinew held a townhall in Eriksdale to discuss the party’s plan to build an emergency room in the community. Eriksdale’s former emergency room was closed under the PC government, which Kinew framed as a consequence of PC Leader Heather Stefanson’s lack of care.

Stefanson toured a mining project in northern Manitoba, and then returned to the key Winnipeg riding of Rossmere to re-announce funding for a local gurdwara. Stefanson introduced the party’s platform titled Vision 2030, most notably, committing  a re-elected PC government to completely phasing out the Payroll Tax over eight years. The move would cost the government $440 million with Stefanson arguing  argu the tax cut will spur economic growth. Public- sector workers on strike chanted “Where is Heather?” outside of Stefanson’s announcement in downtown Winnipeg.

Meanwhile, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business released a Manitoba pre-election survey that found 25 per cent of small businesses worry their concerns will not be addressed in the election campaign. The group has released a wish list for the next government including several tax breaks and support addressing the labour shortage.
