Overview
We’re about one-third of the way through the campaign period as of today. Both the UCP and NDP today promised funding supports for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Health care was also a focus on the campaign trail: a report today showed that recent provincial changes have resulted in a massive increase in internationally trained nurses. Meanwhile, the NDP again attacked the UCP leader’s commitment to public health care, today releasing a video of Danielle Smith talking about hospital efficiencies in 2021. The NDP’s claim is that video excerpt shows that the UCP leader “wants to sell off our public hospitals to private operators.”
The UCP today made public a complaint they submitted to Elections Alberta on May 4, as well as a follow-up submitted yesterday, requesting an investigation into three unions with uniquely close connections to the NDP that are allegedly illegally running advertisements that benefit the NDP, possibly in violation of elections rules.
Today
- In Calgary, UCP candidates Jeremy Nixon (Calgary-Klein), Tanya Fir (Calgary-Peigan), and Pamela Rath (Calgary-Mountain View) made a campaign commitment to bolster funding for women’s shelters and sexual assault centres in Alberta by $20 million over four years, including better promoting Clare’s Law and increasing support for ALERT and ICE.
- The NDP are again trying to raise doubts about the UCP leader’s commitment to public health care, today releasing a video of Danielle Smith talking about hospital efficiencies in 2021 prior to re-entering political life.
- A report today showed incumbent NDP candidate Rod Loyola (Edmonton-Ellerslie) joining the Communist Party of Canada for a march in Edmonton.
- Late yesterday, the NDP announced that they would create the Kids Activity Tax Credit, a tax-refundable credit of up to $500 per child each year that can be applied to the cost of sports or music programs for kids. A similar federal tax credit was abolished by the Trudeau Liberal government in 2017.
